Curfew imposed in Baramulla
OCCUPIED SRINAGAR: A strict curfew was imposed in Barmulla town in held Kashmir on Monday after two persons were killed when police fired at thousands of people protesting against alleged harassment by security forces. The curfew was ordered after thousands of residents angered by the death of a 19-year-old protester earlier in the day started attacking government vehicles and offices. The situation worsened after a second protester died in hospital an hour after he was shot, police said.“We have imposed a strict curfew in Baramulla town,” Deputy Commissioner Latief-u-Zaman Deva told reporters. The paramilitary troops were patrolling the town’s streets, but demonstrations continued in one neighbourhood to mourn and protest the death of the two young protesters. The pair died during earlier protests over the alleged harassment of a Muslim woman at a police station when she was filing a complaint, an accusation the police deny. Thousands of Muslims had taken to the streets of Baramulla. A police officer confirmed the two died in the gunfire and said 24 others were injured, three of them by bullets.
